The famous Wine of Thassos
The first settlers on the island during antiquity were the Phoenicians that left the ancient city of Byblos and settled to the areas of Skala Prinou and Skala Sotiros where the two villas are located, bringing along with them some pomegranate and palm trees as well as vines. The brand name of the villas derives from the ancient city of Byblos and so does Thassos wine going way back to the ancient times, almost 2.500 years ago, as mentioned by Plato and Xenophon in “the Symposium” as well as several ancient marble inscriptions. During the Hellenistic and Classical times the wine of Thassos played a significant role to the island’s economy while as the years went by, the production of wine steadily declined as it was substituted by the production of olive oil. Nowadays, there are only a few limited types of local wine from the few private growers and producers of the island.
Besides the wine and olive oil, the island also produces a strong alcoholic beverage flavored with anise and fruit also known as Tsipouro. During their stay, esteemed guests will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the finest wine, oil and tsipouro beverages as well as numerous organic products and vegetables from the private gardens and vineyard of Villa Chateau Byblos in Thassos along with the best tailor made concierge services in Thassos.
